The
first
time I saw Voltron, I like everyone else saw the Lion Version
first.
So you could imagine my surprise when the series changed over from the
recognizable Lion Force to a new Vehicle Force. I was slightly
peeved
that the producers would do such a thing. But like a lot of other
current Vehicle Voltron fans, I kept watching. I thought that
this
was something temporary and that the Lions would be back soon.
But,
after about a week, I was convinced that the change over was
permanent.
Not only that, but I was begining to like the new series. One
person
who had seen it told me that it was "...like Star Trek and Robotech
mixed
together." I found the Vehicle series to be much more intruiging
because there was not as much formalism to the plot as there was in the
Lion Voltron series. The story arc is very realistic in terms of
interaction between different peoples in positive and negative
aspects.
But what really made me respect the series was the fact that there was
no option but to accept the "baddies" and cooperate with them for a
very
important reason... What would you do if you were living on a
dying
world?
From my knowledge, the
series begins with two forces. The Galaxy
Alliance and the Drule Empire, are exploring new worlds and
finding
places for their overcrowded planets. In the 25th Century, it is
estimated that the Galaxy Alliance may have had 900 or less planets
within
their group. It is assumed that some or most of these planets
have
to have populations that exceed the limits of what the planetary
governments
can provide. Therefore, new planets need to be found that can
harbor
the burgeoning populations of these planets. Amongst the ships
involved
with the mission of finding new worlds, is the InterStellar Starship
Carrier Explorer. This starship is the home to its crew
and
a group of 15 individuals who make up the Voltron Force.
The 15 members of the Vehicle Voltron Force (Jeff, Chip, Rocky, Wolo,
Ginger,
Krik, Lisa, Tangor, Shannon, Zandee, Cliff, Hutch, Marvin, Cinda, and
Modok)
help defend the Explorer and the planets it discovers with the mighty
Vehicle
Voltron. They dedicate their lives to their mission and have
sworn
to defend the universe against the Drule Empire. However, as the
series moves on, the motives of the Drule Empire are made more clear as
the Vehice Voltron Force find out that Planet Drule is slowly
dying.
But the actions of some officals on both sides of the battle lines,
specifically
those that feel that each other is a threat to their mission and that
they
must be stopped, make peace and diplomacy between the Commanders of the
Explorer and Hazar increasingly difficult. Even though all
efforts
to make peace between the two sides eventually results in the
evacuation
of the Drules from their homeworld, some on both sides still have
reservations
about peace between the Alliance and the Drules.
